Appalachian St. ends James Madison's undefeated start to season
James London kicked a walk-off 40-yard field goal in overtime as Appalachian State beat previously unbeaten James Madison 34-31 on Thursday night.
Appalachian State has ended James Madison's perfect start to the season in a Thursday-night thriller at Kidd Brewer Stadium, winning 34-31 in overtime.
Kicker James London was the hero, drilling a walk-off 40-yard field goal in the extra period after James Madison's Morgan Suarez saw his 47-yard attempt clang off the left upright. London was perfect on the night, also converting from 48, 27 and 36 yards as the Mountaineers improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in Sun Belt play.
Malachi Singleton threw two touchdown passes for App State, including a 4-yard strike to Luke Douglas that gave the hosts their first lead of the night at 31-24 late in the fourth quarter. Colton Phares set up that score with a 21-yard interception return to the JMU 14 with 6:03 remaining.
James Madison rallied behind Camden Coleman, who passed for 232 yards and a touchdown and added a 6-yard rushing score. But the Dukes' perfect record — and their place among the nation's last unbeaten teams — ended in the mountains of Boone.
George Pettaway led the JMU ground game with 57 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries before leaving with an apparent injury.
With the loss, only five unbeaten FBS teams remain, including Miami, BYU, Utah and Texas Tech, as the race for the College Football Playoff tightens.
