Bodycam clip released in fatal police shooting of Mississippi one-year-old
Mississippi authorities released body camera footage of the shooting that killed one-year-old Kohen Wiley; the state found the officer justified, but the family disputes it.
Mississippi authorities have released body camera footage showing the fatal police shooting of one-year-old Kohen Wiley, who was sitting on his mother's lap when an officer opened fire during a response to a suspected shoplifting at a store in Senatobia, the BBC reported.
The footage, released Thursday, shows five officers surrounding the car as it begins to pull away. The vehicle reverses into a parked car before moving forward; the officer wearing the body camera raises his gun and fires as the car passes him, shattering the passenger-side window. Four gunshots can be heard as police order the driver to stop, and the car continues to drive slowly away.
The state attorney general found the shooting justified. Martin Zummach, the attorney representing the officer, said the driver "was attempting to kill those 5 officers," adding: "We are very sad for the loss of life."
The child's family, represented by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, disputes that conclusion. Crump said an allegation of shoplifting "does not warrant the death" of a child. Kohen was riding with his mother, Vellesiya Wiley, and another woman. The mother has denied that she and her friend stole nappies from the store, and no charges have been filed.
Senatobia Mayor Greg Graves confirmed to CBS that Hunter Foster was the officer who fired. The boy's death has sparked protests and vigils in Mississippi, where relatives have demanded accountability at a news conference.
