Arrest made after fire at Hitler's Eagle's Nest retreat

Around 200 emergency personnel are deployed to fight the blaze at the Nazi dictator's Alpine residence in Germany.

A suspect has been detained after a fire broke out at Adolf Hitler's Eagle's Nest retreat in the Bavarian Alps.

Police in the southern German state of Bavaria said the suspect was detained during the fire at the historic building, which sits above the town of Berchtesgaden. Dispatchers in Traunstein received a fire alarm from the building at 21:15 local time (19:15 GMT) on Friday, and the blaze was still burning early on Saturday.

Firefighters were hampered by the difficult terrain as they battled to extinguish the flames at the mountaintop site.

A criminal investigation is under way to determine whether the detained suspect is connected to the fire, police said. No further details about the suspect have been released.

Completed by the Nazis in 1938, the Eagle's Nest was used by Hitler as a part-time seat of government. It survived the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945 and has since become a popular tourist destination, housing a mountain inn. Its official website describes it as "also a cautionary reminder of the abysses of the inhumane Nazi dictatorship."

During World War Two, Hitler and his followers were responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of people.
