Brewers withstand Rays' late comeback bid for World Series Game 1 win
Trevor Megill struck out Jonny DeLuca with the tying runs on base to seal the Brewers' 3-2 Game 1 win over the Rays — moments after an apparent game-ending double play was overturned on review.
The Milwaukee Brewers are one win closer to a first-ever championship -- but they had to survive one last scare to get there.
Closer Trevor Megill struck out Jonny DeLuca with the tying and go-ahead runs standing on second and third, sealing a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night in Milwaukee. The heart-stopping finish came one pitch after the Rays believed they had ended the game: Liam Hicks grounded into what looked like a game-ending double play, but a replay review overturned it when the footage showed shortstop Cooper Pratt's right foot was slightly off the bag as he caught Brice Turang's throw.
Starter Jacob Misiorowski earned the win, allowing one run across five innings -- capping a night in which his very first pitch set a World Series record at 103.5 mph.
Milwaukee gave its ace all the support he would need in the first inning. Christian Yelich ripped an RBI triple to ignite a two-run rally that put the Brewers ahead for good, to the delight of a sellout crowd at the club's first World Series home game since 1982. Jackson Chourio and William Contreras added two hits apiece, and Contreras also threw out two would-be base stealers.
The win carries weight beyond a series lead: the Game 1 winner has gone on to take the World Series 62.8 percent of the time. And this is the first Fall Classic featuring two potential first-time champions since 1980, when Philadelphia beat Kansas City.
