Blue Planet III: Moment octopus escapes death after hunt gone wrong

The sequence is part of the latest Blue Planet series from Sir David Attenborough.

An octopus has cheated death in front of the cameras in a newly released clip from Blue Planet III, the BBC's returning natural history landmark.

The sequence shows the octopus venturing out from her normal underwater habitat in search of food, only to cross paths with a predator on the hunt. What follows is a tense underwater chase that ends with the hunt going wrong — and the octopus making a lucky escape.

Filmmakers captured the dramatic encounter for the third instalment of Sir David Attenborough's celebrated Blue Planet series. The new run takes viewers on a journey around the world's oceans, from icy polar waters to the warmth of the tropics, shining a light on the extraordinary creatures that live beneath the waves.

UK audiences can watch Blue Planet III from Sunday 1 November at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer. Viewers outside the UK will have to wait a little longer: the series launches internationally from November, rolling out across the world into 2027.

The octopus clip is the first taste of the new series, and if this near-miss is anything to go by, Blue Planet III promises more of the breathtaking, high-stakes wildlife encounters that made the franchise a global phenomenon.
