Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. is facing a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession following a traffic stop earlier this month in Carmel, Indiana, court records show. The charge was reported by ESPN on Oct. 23.
According to an affidavit provided to ESPN by the Hamilton County prosecutor's office, Richardson was pulled over by a Carmel patrol officer on Oct. 12 over questions about his car's registration. The officer said he detected the smell of marijuana in the vehicle, and Richardson told the officer he had smoked marijuana in the car to avoid doing so at home around his children.
Richardson was asked to step out of the vehicle and was detained in handcuffs while officers searched his Dodge Charger, the documents state. Officers reported finding a small amount of marijuana and 500-milligram THC-infused gummies in the glove compartment, which were confiscated by police.
Richardson was allowed to leave without being arrested, and the prosecutor's office formally filed the charge on Monday, according to court records.
The Colts said in a statement that they were aware of the situation involving Richardson and were gathering additional information. Head coach Shane Steichen referred to the team's statement when asked about the quarterback on Friday.
