Iran war live: Saudi downs Houthi ballistic missile targeting Riyadh

The Saudi-led coalition says its air defences intercepted and destroyed a Houthi ballistic missile targeting Riyadh, after Saudi civil defence issued emergency warnings.

Saudi air defences have intercepted and destroyed a Houthi ballistic missile targeting the capital, Riyadh, the Saudi-led coalition has said.

A spokesperson for the coalition announced the interception in a post on X, according to Al Jazeera's live coverage. The announcement followed emergency warnings issued by Saudi civil defence as the missile threat developed.

Saudi Arabia's civil defence later said the danger had passed in Riyadh, Najran and Wadi al-Dawasir. In separate posts on X, the agency urged residents to continue following safety instructions.

Earlier in the day, the coalition also announced the interception and destruction of a drone.

The interception came on a day of wider escalation across the region. Houthi-affiliated media reported renewed air attacks in Yemen's Saada governorate, while monitors recorded October as the worst month yet for attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, with at least 28 confirmed strikes on vessels.

TrendWire notes the interception claims come from the Saudi-led coalition's own announcements, as carried by Al Jazeera, and have not been independently verified. As with all claims in an active conflict, the coalition's statements are reported here as attributed claims rather than independently confirmed facts.
