Harry Brook's double century breaks record for highest-ever England one-day score

Harry Brook smashed 202 against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi — the first double century by an England batter in a one-day international.

England captain Harry Brook has become the first England batter to score a double century in a one-day international, smashing 202 against Sri Lanka in the tri-series in Rawalpindi on Thursday.

Brook's astonishing innings took him past Ben Stokes' previous England record of 182, made against Australia in 2018. Reaching 200 from just 114 balls, he also set a new record for the fastest double century in ODI history — and became only the 14th man to reach the milestone in a men's one-day international.

The 27-year-old was eventually dismissed to the final ball of the innings, but by then his assault on a helpless Sri Lanka attack had lifted England to an enormous 429-4 from their 50 overs. Joe Root contributed 69 and Will Jacks an unbeaten 66 in support.

The innings was notable for its measured acceleration. Brook went from 100 to 200 in only 39 balls as England plundered 156 runs from the final 10 overs. Fittingly, the double hundred was reached with a paddled sweep, with Jacks celebrating at the non-striker's end — before Brook skewed the final ball of the innings into the hands of third man.

The knock came after England lost their tri-series opener against Pakistan at the same ground on Tuesday, with Brook having demanded a response from his side.

It also continued a remarkable personal run against Sri Lanka: Brook's previous highest ODI score was 136 not out, also made against the same opposition.
