Man dies after car crashes into Lidl supermarket

A man in his 30s died after a car crashed through the entrance of a Lidl supermarket in Wolverhampton on Friday evening; several other people received treatment.

A man in his 30s has died after a car smashed through the entrance of a Lidl supermarket in Wolverhampton on Friday evening.

West Midlands Police were called to the store on Finchfield Hill shortly before 18:00 BST. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while several other people received treatment, the force said. West Midlands Fire Service said it dispatched four crews to the crash at 17:51.

The car ploughed through the glass entrance of the shop and came to rest just inside, close to where shoppers were standing. Eyewitness Tina Bonev described the crash as "absolutely terrifying" and told of panicked scenes inside the store, with people meters away from where the vehicle stopped. Videos shared with the BBC showed a woman calling out for anyone able to give first aid.

Police cordoned off Finchfield Road West and Finchfield Hill as emergency services worked at the scene. A fire engine remained parked outside the store into the evening, and cars could still be seen in the supermarket car park behind the cordon.

West Midlands Police said the man's death is not being treated as suspicious, adding that its thoughts were with his family at this sad time. The BBC said the breaking story was still being updated and that further details would follow.
