North Korea’s Kim Jong Un arrives in China, South Korean media say

South Korean media report Kim Jong Un arrived in Dandong via the newly opened New Yalu River Bridge, about a week after the crossing opened.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has arrived in the Chinese border city of Dandong, according to South Korean media reports published on Saturday, October 24.

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported that Kim crossed into China through the New Yalu River Bridge earlier in the day. The reports have not, in the material reviewed, been presented as a confirmed statement from Pyongyang or Beijing, so the arrival is attributed here to South Korean media, as in the original headline.

The reported visit comes about a week after the bridge linking the two countries was officially opened. The four-lane structure was completed in 2014, but its opening had been delayed for years, making the crossing itself a notable development in cross-border links.

China is North Korea’s largest trading partner and an important source of diplomatic, economic and political support. Dandong, on the Yalu River frontier, is a key gateway between the two neighbours, and movements across that border are closely followed in Seoul and beyond.

Kim’s last known visit to China was in September 2025, when he attended the 80th Victory Day celebrations in Beijing. That context makes a reported return to China a significant moment for watchers of the region, even though the reports reviewed did not set out a detailed agenda for this trip.

Further details, including any meetings or statements during the visit, had not been set out in the reports reviewed at the time of writing.
