Six shot dead by gunmen at church funeral in Jordan, officials say

Six people were killed and 28 injured when two gunmen opened fire at a church funeral in Jordan's Karak governorate, officials say.

Six people were killed when two gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a church in Jordan's Karak governorate, a government spokesperson has said, the BBC reports.

Another 28 people were injured in the attack on Friday, the BBC says.

The unidentified gunmen are reported to have arrived in a car before beginning to shoot inside the church and then fleeing the scene, according to the BBC.

Government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani described the attack as "heinous" and said security forces had been deployed to the area, the BBC reports.

Khaled Burqan, one of the mourners, told Jordan's al-Mamlaka state-run TV that the two attackers — armed with a rifle and a pistol — fired at mourners for several minutes, according to the BBC.

One witness told the AFP news agency that between 150 and 200 people were in the church at the time of the shooting, the BBC says.

No one has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, and a news briefing by interior ministry officials is expected shortly, the BBC reports.

Karak has a sizeable Christian community in majority-Muslim Jordan. The BBC notes that such violence is rare in Jordan, although deadly attacks have been carried out in the country in the past.
