Stunning photos capture October's Hunter's Moon around the world

October's full Moon, known as the Hunter's Moon, lit up skies around the world this weekend, photographed from San Francisco to Baghdad.

October's full Moon lit up skies around the world this weekend, and photographers captured it rising and setting over cities, coastlines and landmarks on several continents.

Full Moons through the year have traditionally been given names that reflect what is happening in nature. This one is known by several names, including the Hunter's Moon, a name rooted in historical traditions in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Hunter's Moon is known to sit in the sky for a particularly long time, similar to the preceding Harvest Moon, giving hunters extra light in the skies.

In the United States, the Moon was photographed over San Francisco Bay in California, where passengers on a plane had a striking view, and rising behind the skyline of midtown Manhattan in New York City. It was also seen setting over San Francisco later in the night.

In the United Kingdom, it was captured over Stoney Middleton in Derbyshire, from Kimmeridge in Dorset and in a clear view over Felixstowe in Suffolk.

Elsewhere, the full Moon glowed a burnt orange over the Galata Tower in Istanbul, Turkey, and rose over Firdous Square in Baghdad, Iraq. In Italy, it rose behind the Basilica of the Madonna dei Martiri in Molfetta, taking on an orange or reddish hue.

That colour appears when the Moon is low in the sky. Short-wavelength blue light is scattered as moonlight passes through a large depth of the atmosphere, leaving the warmer orange and red tones that photographers captured across the weekend.
