Yamal, Mbappe in El Clasico spotlight as 40 cameras dedicated to coverage

Up to 40 cameras will cover Sunday's El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid at Camp Nou, with special TV focus on Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe.

El Clasico is getting the blockbuster television treatment. Up to 40 cameras will cover Sunday's showdown between Barcelona and Real Madrid at Camp Nou, with special attention on superstars Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe — just a day before the Ballon d'Or winners are announced.

The plan, reported by Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, calls for cameras distributed across the stadium on a predefined shooting plan, featuring ultra-high-definition filming, slow-motion replays and individual player-tracking techniques.

The beefed-up coverage follows controversy in Real Madrid's recent win over Sevilla, where an off-the-ball clash involving midfielder Adra Guler and Sevilla's Peque could not be clearly judged despite 26 cameras being in use — reviving debate over whether television angles can settle such flashpoints.

La Liga rates El Clasico as an "A+" fixture, its highest category, requiring between 35 and 40 cameras, while ordinary Barcelona or Real Madrid games need at least 22.

Coverage will include long-range and cinematic lenses delivering 4K images, cameras positioned behind both goals, and high-speed equipment built to freeze and replay rapid action.

El Clasico has long been a showcase for broadcast innovation. In 2017, the fixture was filmed with 40 cameras mounted on cranes and helicopters, with dedicated slow-motion cameras tracking Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and more than 400 specialists involved. A 2016 edition trialled 360-degree replays, and recent games have used between 32 and 38 cameras along with drones, aerial shots and live data feeds.
