Arsenal hold off Liverpool for first win at Anfield since 2012

Kai Havertz's 16th-minute goal, aided by an Alisson Becker error, gave Arsenal their first Premier League win at Anfield in 16 years as the Gunners extended their lead at the top.

Arsenal ended 16 years of hurt at Anfield on Sunday, grinding out a 1-0 Premier League win over Liverpool to tighten their grip on top spot.

Not since 2012, when current manager Mikel Arteta was still running the Gunners' midfield, had Arsenal won a league game at Liverpool's home. The breakthrough came courtesy of Kai Havertz's 16th-minute strike — and a costly error from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Alisson's attempted pass to Jeremie Jacquet left the defender with no chance, and the loose ball was seized upon by Arsenal. Noni Madueke and Declan Rice combined to set up Havertz for a simple tap-in at the far post.

The goal was a landmark for Havertz: his 46th in the Premier League, moving him past Ilkay Gundogan as the competition's all-time leading German scorer. It was also his third of the season for Arsenal.

Liverpool, the defending champions, dominated long stretches after falling behind but were repeatedly let down by a lack of composure in the final third. Goalkeeper David Raya was rarely troubled, and the hosts were left to rue a VAR call that went against them when Jurrien Timber's tug on Alexander Isak's shirt went unpunished.

Alisson had got away with a few loose passes in last week's win over Brighton, but Arsenal showed no mercy this time. The victory lifted Arsenal to eight wins from nine games and 24 points, while Liverpool remain on 15.
