At least one dead and four injured in Paris suburb shooting

One person was killed and at least four injured when a gunman opened fire from a car in Trappes, west of Paris. France's anti-terror prosecutor has taken over the investigation.

French anti-terror prosecutors have taken charge of the investigation into a deadly shooting in the Paris suburb of Trappes that killed one person and left at least four others wounded, the BBC reported.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu described the "very serious events" in the town west of the French capital. The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) said it had opened an investigation covering possession of a Category A weapon — military-grade arms banned for civilian use — and criminal conspiracy linked to the attack.

Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh said an individual opened fire from his vehicle at several people. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said the attacker appeared to have used an automatic weapon. Reports in French media suggested the casualty count could be higher than the initial official figure.

President Emmanuel Macron said he felt "deep emotion" over the attack and sent his thoughts to the victims and their families.

A large deployment of police and emergency services was seen at the scene, with officers examining evidence around a petrol station where the shooting took place, according to images published by the BBC.

The incident comes as France remains on heightened security alert ahead of a planned weekend of protests. PNAT said it would lead the inquiry because of the nature of the attack.

Police had not yet publicly identified the gunman or given a motive. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
