Australian MP's condition improves after alleged car attack

Independent Australian MP Helen Haines is now in a serious but stable condition after the alleged car attack that cost her both legs — the first improvement since she was airlifted to a Melbourne hospital.
The 65-year-old was struck five days ago outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, north-east Victoria, in what authorities describe as a deliberate attack. She has since had both legs amputated.
Melbourne's Alfred Hospital said on Saturday morning that her condition had improved from critical to serious but stable.
The accused attacker, 43-year-old Brendan Nugent, was arrested shortly after the incident and has appeared in court on three charges: dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Police say further charges, including attempted murder, may follow.
His lawyer has said Nugent has "mental health concerns" but gave no further detail. Victoria Police, backed by the Australian Federal Police, says the investigation continues and no motive has been established; investigators are examining whether drug use or medication played a part.
Haines's husband, Phil Haines, said on Wednesday that the "horrendous incident" caused significant injuries but "her heart and her mind" were "in good shape". Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said there had been a "rise in temperature" in public life, with "too much shouting, not enough discourse".
A former nurse and midwife who entered parliament in 2019, Haines is known for supporting stronger climate action. The charges against Nugent are allegations; his case remains before the courts.
