Bayern Munich coach Kompany hospitalized after collapsing at training

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been hospitalized for examinations after collapsing during a training session on Friday, the German club confirmed.

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been hospitalized after collapsing during a training session on Friday, the German club confirmed.

The 40-year-old fell ill while watching a training session for the club's reserve team and required medical care, Bayern said in a statement. "Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care," the club said. "His coaching staff will oversee training and match activities until further notice."

Director of sport Max Eberl said the Belgian's health was the club's top priority: "Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs."

Kompany had been battling a viral infection that affected his legs over the past week. Assistant Aaron Danks, who took over training and media duties on Tuesday, said: "It has affected his legs at times and he's felt some pain. It's just a virus."

Despite the illness, Kompany took his place on the sideline for Bayern's Champions League match against Arsenal on Wednesday and was also subdued and remained seated during Saturday's 6-1 Bundesliga win over RB Leipzig. Kompany later acknowledged he had tried to push through the illness and failed, and reportedly needed help to climb stairs.

Bayern, who are top of the Bundesliga and level on points with Borussia Dortmund, visit Freiburg on Sunday.
