Conte dismisses reports of Man United takeover with Carrick’s job uncertain

Antonio Conte says he is not in advanced talks to replace Michael Carrick at Manchester United and called reports of his demands 'unfounded'.

Former Chelsea and Napoli coach Antonio Conte has dismissed reports linking him with a move to take over at Manchester United, insisting he is not in advanced negotiations with the club.

'My name has been linked with numerous clubs, but there are currently no negotiations at an advanced stage,' Conte said. 'These reports are unfounded, as there is currently no concrete basis for such assessments.' He added that following his 'wonderful and successful spell' at Napoli, he would take the time he needs and make 'a carefully considered decision' about his future.

The speculation comes with United languishing 13th in the Premier League and 20th in the Champions League standings after Wednesday's 4-1 thrashing by Como in Italy. The defeat extended their winless run to seven games in all competitions and intensified scrutiny of manager Michael Carrick.

Conte, who won the Premier League with Chelsea and also managed Tottenham Hotspur, last coached Napoli in the 2025-26 season. He said he would only be interested in a concrete opportunity, and until then 'any assumptions about my demands and my professional future remain speculation.'

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler, another name linked with the United job, also distanced himself from the speculation. The 33-year-old, England's youngest top-flight manager, said he had no time for rumours and was focused solely on Brighton, who sit third in the Premier League table.
