Melania Trump brokers truce for Ukraine city 'on brink of disaster', White House says

The White House says Melania Trump has brokered a ceasefire in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky; neither Kyiv nor Moscow has confirmed it.

Melania Trump has brokered a local ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, the White House has said.

In a statement, the White House said the US first lady had "successfully secured" a truce in the front-line city in the Kherson region, which it described as "on the brink of disaster". The pause in fighting is due to begin on 29 October. Neither Ukraine nor Russia has publicly confirmed the arrangement.

Oleshky, in southern Ukraine, was seized by Russian forces in the opening days of the full-scale invasion. Before the war it was home to about 24,000 people; Ukraine now estimates only a small number remain, most of them elderly.

The city has been without gas or electricity since 2023, according to the BBC, and residents have been reduced to eating garden weeds to survive. Children still in the wider area are suffering from malnutrition and a shortage of medicine, with only one hospital partially operational. Ukraine's foreign ministry says Russian forces have imposed a "full blockade" on the city, blocking aid deliveries. The Kremlin acknowledged in September that Oleshky faced a "critical situation".

According to the White House, Melania Trump and her representative worked "directly with Russia" to arrange the deal. Non-military civilian leaders from both countries will visit Oleshky residents, and those who want to leave will receive coordinated transport to their preferred destinations. The statement did not say how long the ceasefire would last.

The move follows her August 2025 letter to Vladimir Putin about the war's impact on children. She has since said the Russian president responded, and 34 children have reportedly been returned to Ukraine since 2025.
