Sources: Devils in advanced talks to acquire G Hellebuyck from Jets

The New Jersey Devils are in advanced talks to acquire goaltender Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets, sources told ESPN on Friday.

A deal is not yet finalized, with sources saying there are still details to iron out. Talks gained significant momentum Thursday night after the Jets had been underwhelmed by the trade offers they had received as recently as last weekend, according to sources.

Winnipeg has reason to want the trade completed this weekend: Hellebuyck's suspension for failing to report to training camp ends Friday, and the Jets host the Heritage Classic on Sunday and want the focus on that event.

Hellebuyck, 33, requested a trade from Winnipeg this summer, saying it was in the best interest for him and his family. One of the NHL's most decorated active goaltenders, he has won two Vezina Trophies.

The Devils are led by first-year general manager Sunny Mehta, formerly of the Florida Panthers front office. Mehta has already been bold between the pipes, trading last season's starting goaltender Jacob Markstrom to Florida this summer.
