Musah is back in Milan, back in midfield and back in contention for the USMNT

Yunus Musah is thriving back at AC Milan in his favoured midfield role — and his revival could not be better timed for the United States.

Yunus Musah is enjoying a revival at AC Milan — and it could not have come at a better time for the United States.

In last weekend's Serie A clash with Atalanta, the Milan midfielder produced a vintage moment: collecting the ball just beyond the centre circle, driving forward and winning a penalty that Gonçalo Ramos converted on the way to a 3-2 victory. It was the latest sign of Musah's resurgence under manager Amorim.

The turnaround is striking. Last season, loaned out to Atalanta, Musah made 29 appearances in all competitions but managed only 939 minutes of football. "[It was] very frustrating, because I believe that I'm a player that's a starter," he admitted.

Back in Milan and restored to his favoured central midfield role, he is thriving. "I love playing in middle. It's my favorite position," Musah said. He is also benefiting from playing alongside Luka Modrić, whose six Champions League titles and vast experience have made a deep impression. "It's amazing, really. I'm learning a lot from [Modrić]," he added.

Amid summer speculation that he was on his way out, a preseason text from Amorim helped persuade him to stay, and the manager's positivity has kept him in the side.

Musah's club form has yet to fully translate to the national team — he struggled to impose himself for the United States in the recent September and October windows, and competition in the U.S. midfield remains fierce. But with a trip to Jamaica in little more than two weeks, his return to form leaves him firmly back in contention.
